Bellevue School District’s STEM initiative has expanded to include every elementary school. This important initiative provides integrated learning experiences with a focus on 21st century skills. The emphasis on evidence-based reasoning supports critical thinking and prepares students to effectively communicate across academic disciplines. The STEM initiative also provides opportunities for thoughtful integration of technology through the use of robotics, coding, and 3-D printers at every elementary school. The broad impact of Bellevue’s STEM initiative is a significant feature in that it provides STEM education for all students rather than limit the impact to a single magnet school. Cheri Bortleson is a K-5 STEM & Computer Science Curriculum Developer for the Bellevue School District. She oversees implementation of the K-5 Computer Science initiative with the goal of implementing high quality computer science education across the district. In her role, she leads professional development for teachers and has worked with teams of teachers to develop curriculum that integrates computational thinking into core subjects. Previously, Cheri has been a classroom teacher, special education teacher, early literacy specialist, literacy developer, and elementary principal. She earned her master’s degree in curriculum and instruction for at-risk students, and program administration and principal certification from the University of Washington. Cheri is committed to computer science education and believes in the power of transforming the elementary classroom for all students to succeed.
